Koai rode her horse along a path that had been leveled, weaving through the forest.

The night she had faced the Grand Duke, a strange man, and a strange woman in the Bohar Wasteland had passed. A day and a half later, night had fallen deep once more.

Koai looked up at the stars floating in the night sky, recalling the first night she had walked with her.

The night they walked from their old home to the settlement in search of alcohol... holding her hand, supporting her when she occasionally stumbled.

At that time, for the first time... she felt she could slightly understand the sentiment of finding the sparkling starry sky beautiful. Feeling the warmth of her hand in hers, gazing at the same sparkle she was.

And now, as she recalled it, she felt her warmth against her chest.

Koai continued onward, her heart feeling a little buoyant...

"You there, halt."

Eventually, she heard a voice. A beat later, a pillar of fire erupted on the path ahead of Koai.

It was likely someone's magic, but she couldn't sense any strong flow of magical power nearby. Was there some kind of auxiliary mechanism at play, or was it perhaps just flashy, intimidating magic meant to bluff?
